SPRING 2011 trends TOP TEN

People often ask (every day in fact) if I miss the fashion business. The truth is...I do, especially this time of year when Spring issues of Vogue and Elle are out and I remember the excitement of a new season. But the reality is that as a designer you never get to enjoy the moment. It is the opposite of living in the present.
Now as a retailer, consumer and objective observer I have a broader view of the trends and still feel compelled to select and comment on the ones I like. Here are my Top Ten:
1. WHITE on WHITE...Always a classic. For spring, you can experiment with new shapes and silhouettes in basic white or adorn it with accessories as if it were a blank canvas.

2. FEMININE PRINTS...Even though I started my career as a textile print designer, I rarely wear prints, because they are often boring, ugly or overdone...when the designer gets it right it works!

3. NEUTRAL TERRITORY...Clearly my trend taste runs towards the perennial favorites and not the passing fad, but who doesn't love Ralph's take on the beige/white/khaki mix?

4. STOP IN YOUR TRACKS COLOR...There is no fear of brights on the runway for Spring. Maybe it is like a forced smile during a tough economy, but I like it.

5. REINVENTING THE PANT...High rise, bell bottom, wide leg. I am still a fan of the skinny/straight leg jeans, capris, but thats just because they fit my non-shapely silhouette, but I am sure there are many grateful women out there who welcome the waistband relocating back to the waist and the forgiving shape of wide leg trousers. A classic look from Derek Lam.

6. STRIPES...Nautical or not, Spring wouldn't be Spring without stripes. I am personally not a huge fan for myself, but always love the look on others when worn well.

7. THAT 70'S LOOK...In the seventies I was wearing beat up Landlubber hip-hugger jeans and oversized chambray workshirts or Indian print granny dresses with hiking boots. Somehow I missed the "glam" trend as a homesteader/goat farming artist. But this Spring it is touted as "new" and here it is on my daughter, Brita in her vintage Pucci.

8. ACCESSORY AS ACCENT...Wearing colorful scarves and jewelry is the way to express yourself...I love this unusual color combination by Matthew Williamson.

9. A LITTLE BIT OF LACE...OR A LOT...Take your pick...or not. Just don't look like Madonna circa 1985.

10. BIG BANGLES ...from Marc Jacobs to ISLA beach house...big bangles are the must-have trend in fun jewelry!

Yup, me too. I miss the quality and beauty of your clothes. Such well done, nice details, and great cut and high quality materials. Please please please find a way to consult for the fashion industry, because you filled a niche that no one has been able to approach!

HELP-like the others who commented I too miss you line and I am in search of a designer who offers a pant that’s similar to your ‘modernist’. These have been the only pants that I’ve found that fit my body type. Since childhood I’ve worn boys & men’s jeans because they fit me best. I’m all leg (no hip or butt) and short wasted with toned thighs. But mens dress pants are not an option! I’ve combed ebay w little luck. So, any suggestions? I’m down to my last pair of S.O. dress pants and welcome any advice.

I had to give away one of my last Sigrid Olsen knit tops today because I now wear a much smaller size and it just didn’t work anymore. I loved that print and that style so much that I thought I would wear it to shreds! I was a huge fan and appreciated having options that were lively and colorful with a hand-printed look, and that fit me so well. Like everyone else here, I wish wish wish that you were still designing this kind of clothing.

I still have not given hope that your fabulous clothes will once again be available. I savor the onces I still have and am so sad when something wears out. I will cross my eyes with my fingers if that will help. Please figure out a way…. thank you.

I have to say that your line of clothing was perfect in every way. I was saddened to not find your line in the department stores. My first purchase was in Jacobsons and that too was a disappointment when they closed their doors. I had a flood in my house and many of my clothes were damaged by water and mildew your line of clothing is the only thing that upset me, they are not replaceable. I hope you are happy in all your endevors.

Sigrid, your clothes were absolutely beautiful. I miss your designs and creativity so much. I wish your clothes were still avaiable. Every time I went to a big department store, I headed right to your collections. Please come back with your fabulous clothes.

I was raised in Ocala, Fla. but, live in Atlanta.
Being a retired flight attendant from Delta, it would be easy to fly into SRQ when you open your shop again in the fall. I used to love to layover at the Hilton there when working.
I had written you last yr. about you getting back into the clothing sector and I was excited when you took the time to write me back.. I am a big fan of your work. I had majored in art at the U.of Fla. and taught for a short while. I see very clearly your wonderful talent. Every item I have saved in your clothing line in special to me. They are the ones I always pull out to wear first. Thank you.

I can’t tell you how many of my family, and my friends miss your wonderful line of clothing! No one else seems to have figured “mix and match”. I bought many items on the sale, and am still wearing a few of them. I guess we all hoped you would reappear, and make it easy and fun for us! All good wishes for your new venture.

Thank you for all of the compliments…at this time I do not know of any place to purchase the clothes I used to design, except maybe on e-bay. Best to all….Sigrid

Sigrid:I never wore outfits that please me so much and fit me so well
as your clothes. I was distressed to know you had quit
after searching for your styles everywhere. Please tell me that someone is going to pick up your designs where you left them. Thank you.

I liked very much what Sigrid Olsen is doing, but I would like to know where to find the T-Shirts she uses
to design? In New York? Boston?
I would like to receive an answer to my questions.
I always in former years bought T-Shirts in Woodbury outlet.
Sincerely Yours, Roberta Marcondes.
